Song Saturday! Fat Lip by Sum41

Strollin' to the party like my name is El ninio
Well I'm hangin' out drinking in the back of an El camino
As a kid, was a skid and no one knew me by name
I trashed my own house party cause no body came
Lately, I've been listening to a lot of Green Day, blink182, and (of course) Sum 41, along with many other songs from that time. These opening lyrics are so ionic to me. Also, it's funny that they reference El Nino because I remember that being a huge deal growing up. That was talked about a lot in school.
Well I know I'm not the one you thought you knew back in high school
Never going, never showing up when we had to
Attention that we crave don't tell us to behave,
I'm sick of always hearing act your age
This song takes me back to middle school. Because this song came out in 2001, and I'm old. I remember, then, thinking how I wasn't in high school yet, and now, when I listen to this song, it feels like forever ago when I was in high school. The song hasn't changed, but my perception of things have changed.
I don't want to waste my time
Become another casualty of society
I'll never fall in line
Become another victim of your conformity
And back down
Okay, even when I listened to this in middle school, I wasn't a rebel. Not even close. I was the smart, quiet girl in school, so to sing along to this song, then and now, is rather odd. Maybe even more so now, because I listen to this song on the way to work.
Because you don't
Know us at all we laugh when old people fall
But what would you expect with a conscience so small
Heavy metal and mullets is how we were raised
Maiden and priest were the gods that we praised
Because I chose this song, I looked up about Sum 41. First off, they are a Canadian band, which I was surprised to learn. Secondly, they are still doing tours! It seems like they are still doing well for themselves.
Cause we like having fun at other peoples expense and,
Cutting people down is just a minor offense then,
It's none of your concern, I guess I'll never learn
I'm sick of being told to wait my turn
It's such a cliche that teenagers want and like to rebel. But it's a cliche for a reason. Now that I have grown up, and I see teenagers (and just young people in general) having their own versions of rebellion. At first, I didn't understand it. But when I realized it was only young people engaging in certain behaviors (I rather not get into detail about it), then it all started making sense. No matter what the status quo is, teenagers just have to rebel against it.
I don't want to waste my time
Become another casualty of society
I'll never fall in line
Become another victim of your conformity
And back down
Remember Napster? Holy crap, I haven't thought about that in a long time. That's how I listened to this song, by downloading it on Napster. I still remember it like it was yesterday. And the music player that I used was Winamp. You were super cool if you changed the theme and colors on Winamp. Yeah, this is like memory lane.
Don't count on me, to let you know when
Don't count on me, I'll do it again
Don't count on me, it's the point you're missing
Don't count on me, cause I'm not listening
Well I'm a no goodick lower middle class brat,
Back packed and I don't give a shit about nothing
You be standing on the corner talking all that kufuffin
But you won't make any sense from all the gas you'll be huffing
And if the egg don't stain you'll be ringing off the hook,
You're on the hit list wanted in the telephone book
I like songs with distortion, drinkin' in proportion
The doctor said my mom should have had an abortion
I don't want to waste my time
Become another casualty of society
I'll never fall in line
Become another victim of your conformity
And back down
Waste my time with a
Casualty of society
Waste my time with a
Victim of your conformity
And back down

Okay, I ran out of things to talk about. But I picked this song specifically because I remember listening to this when I was younger and to listen to it now is some kind of time warp. Things have definitely changed, my perception has changed, and my age has changed, but the song stays the same. It's interesting to revisit old songs or books and see how my perception has changed.
